Day 86: Southern Farm Stand Stew with Okra, Tomatoes & Sweet Corn ♥

A great summer stew, summer's best fresh okra, ripe tomatoes and sweet corn, lightly cooked and seasoned with chili powder. The chili powder may "sound" unusual but it really works, somehow deepening the flavors of the vegetables without shouting "chili powder". ~recipe & photo updated 2010 & 2014~ ~ more recently updated recipes ~ ~such a favorite recipe, republished in 2010 ~ 2005 Original: Quintessential summer , that's what this Farm Stand Stew brings to mind. It's a bit of effort but with perfectly fresh tomatoes, okra and sweet corn, worth every minute. If time were the #1 factor, I'd substitute canned tomatoes and frozen corn for the fresh. They're such good products these days, the difference, I suspect, while discernible, wouldn't be enough to quibble. (See 2010 notes for a very different idea!) This is the first time I've cooked okra! I bought them at the farmers market without having a clue how to cook them but

Day 85: Beans with 'Garden Salad' Spice Mix

Yesterday I stopped by the local Penzey's store to see whether there is a 'cake spice' for vegetables. Cake spice is a long-, long-time favorite spice blend. It makes anything that calls for cinnamon or nutmeg - muffins, coffee cakes, cookies - taste a notch or two or even three better. (At the shop today, I also discovered baking spice - if a nose test is any indication, it may add several notches still!) I was looking for the same magic for vegetables - something to easily add to vegetables with reliably delicious results. The ladies there sent me home with two blends, Garden Salad and Salad Elegant. (Neither seem available at the Penzey website though may be by phone.) 'Garden Salad' is a blend of Romano cheese, poppy and sesame seed, garlic, chives and white pepper. And yes - it was quite delicious on these farmers-market fresh, lightly steamed green beans. I'll add others to the list as I try them! Wanna skip the Penzey stop? Check out the spice

Day 84: Apple Juice Slaw ♥

What an easy coleslaw! Better yet? It's naturally sweetened with apple juice (instead of processed sugar like most other coleslaws) which adds a lovely tart-apple tang that really makes the coleslaw stand out from the crowd. Weight Watchers Friendly. Low Cal. Low Carb. Gluten Free. Paleo. Not just vegan, " Vegan Done Real ". Better still? Totally tasty! ~recipe updated from the Recipe Box, first posted 2005!~ ~ more recently updated recipes ~ WAY BACK IN 2005 Add this to your collection of great, every-day slaws, this one with a spike of apple. The recipes comes from my sister Adanna who reports that her family goes through "a lot" of cabbage. And why not? It's cheap, convenient, tasty and healthful. The first time I made Apple Juice Slaw, we were together on vacation so my sister got to sample it. "This is really apple-y," she said – and she was right. The second time, the slaw turned out less apple-y but I have no idea why. The third time,
