"Always Shop With a List"

Isn't that what all that smart shoppers advise? So we don't buy what we don't need? So we don't fall prey to pricey impulse items? So we stick to the meal plan? So we don't forget the one thing we came for?

Late Friday, I tripped expectantly into the market armed with a list, for once knowing exactly what was needed for Plan A aka Supper. Oops. No tomatillos, even though they'd been plentiful earlier in the week. No cauliflower, "Sorry, I sold the last head an hour ago, more tomorrow." I fussed for a few minutes, looking over all the mannnny choices at a farmers market in full summer, trying to figure out what ELSE to make when my heart (and said Supper menu) was set on one thing.

My heart found inspiration in a beautiful watermelon. I grabbed a cucumber too and knew that theretogether was Plan B aka a fruity Summer Salad – and just like Plan A, "summer in a bowl".

So much for shopping with a list, at least this once.

And speaking of Kitchen Parade, be sure to head on over asap because it's got a brand-new "kitchen" – the same great recipes in a brand-new site with a fresh look and new features. It was just unveiled yesterday! Here you go, KitchenParade.com, the online home of my food column!

Shopping For, err, With, an iPHONE

Oh – and while I think about having ready access to vegetable recipes at the drop of a hat, er, pixel, last week I got to meet "food blogger family": Kalyn's Kitchen's brother Rand and his family stopped in St. Louis for a day during a cross-country trek. What fun! We all gorged on chocolate banana malts at the "divine" Crown Candy Kitchen plus I got to play with Rand's new iPhone (thanks for the tour, Hannah!) and browsed straight to A Veggie Venture to see how it looked. If I may say so myself, it looks and works great!! especially if you're at the grocery wondering what to make with such'n'such vegetable. The link to the Alphabet of Vegetables is right in the header – so no scrolling – and then you can easily find the vegetable you're after, pick a recipe, check what other ingredients might be needed and voila! supper's vegetable is covered! Since I don't have my own iPhone (though hmm, couldn't it be considered a business expense?) if you have experience with this and have suggestions, please please do let me know.

COMPLIMENTS!

WATERMELON, CUCUMBER & FETA SALAD

Hands-on time: 15 minutes
Time to table: 15 minutes
Makes 4 cups

Watermelon, about 3 cups of cubes
Cucumber, peeled and seeded, about 1 cup of cubes
Red onion, diced very small, about 2 tablespoons
Fresh basil, cut in thin strips, about 2 tablespoons
Feta, crumbled, about 1 ounce (a one-inch square)

Mix all the ingredients. Serve right away. Enjoy!

ALANNA'S TIPS & KITCHEN NOTES
WATERMELON This is a salad that's only as good as the melon. If yours isn't especially good, the salad can turn out a little so-so, not exactly inspiring. A few ideas to fix? Try one, then another. Sprinkle with a little salt. Sprinkle with a little lime juice or a gentle vinegar. Sprinkle with a little sugar or honey. Let chill for a few minutes until serving. All these can and do make a difference but still, can't compensate for a mealy or flavorless watermelon.
SERVE RIGHT AWAY Make only as much as will be eaten at once because Watermelon, Cucumber & Feta Salad doesn't keep. There's no real need to measure, just chop-chop.
CUCUMBER If you have a garden cucumber, either from your own garden or the grocery store, the skins can be tough and the insides seedy. That's why I always specify peeling and seeding cucumbers. But if you have an English or Persian cucumber with soft skins and few seeds, just chop it up a bit, these are more expensive but so pretty!

  1. I need that decidedly refreshing salad now. It's +30celsius here, and I'm obviously not equipped to cope with such heat. Some cooling watermelon salad would really hit the spot!!!

  2. I want an iphone! I can't wait to play with it when they get here today. They all loved meeting you! People who don't quite understand how people can become friends online would never really get how it would be so fun for you guys to meet. Thanks for making them feel so welcome and picking such a great restaurant.

  3. What a great combination. I've never thought to put all of those things together, but I imagine the creamyness of the feta would compliment the crisp flavor of the cucumber.

  7. I've had a version of that salad with black olives in it, and it didn't seem quite right. I think I'd like yours better! Maybe a little mint chiffonade?
